3. Just plain sloppy

As more people use email, sloppy work is becoming more of a problem. Common complaints include:

• Not being clear on the goal of the email

• Not attempting to structure the message logically

• Not doing spellcheck

• Using text-like code and abbreviations

• Poor typing habits

• Not stating the action required, leaving the reader wondering

4. Using the wrong case

Sloppy work sometimes results in writers using ALL CAPITALS or lower case abbreviations. In the world of email, using capital letters is equivalent to SHOUTING! (Didn’t you automatically raise your voice then, even when reading this to yourself?) Capitals are seen as rude and annoying, and it should not be necessary even to put a subject line in capital letters. At the other extreme, some people cannot be bothered with capital letters at all, and this can be very frustrating, as can abbreviations like the ones seen in the following message. Sometimes a message can be abbreviated so much that it is difficult to read.
